CTA (Technological Corporation of Andalusia)<\/strong><\/a>, in collaboration with the Regional Ministry of Industry, Energy and Mines of the Government of Andalusia<\/a><\/strong> and the International Center for Advanced Materials and Raw Materials of Castile and Le\u00f3n (ICAMCYL)<\/a><\/strong>, it has organized the conference \u201cAndalusia at the Heart of the European Critical Raw Materials Strategy\u201d<\/em>, held on 10 December<\/strong> in Seville. The event, held within the framework of the European IRMHUB<\/strong> project<\/a>, of which CTA<\/strong> is a partner, brought together more than 50 international attendees<\/strong> to analyze the development opportunities offered by Andalusia\u2019s mining ecosystem and the region\u2019s role in strategic European projects on critical raw materials.

The event was opened by Jes\u00fas Portillo<\/strong>, Director General for Mines of the Government of Andalusia, and El\u00edas Atienza<\/strong>, CEO of Technological Corporation of Andalusia (CTA), who both highlighted the historic opportunity for Andalusia to position itself as a benchmark in the sustainable management, processing and use of critical raw materials.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Jes\u00fas Portillo<\/strong>, Director General for Mines of the Government of Andalusia, highlighted \u201cAndalusia\u2019s leadership role on the national mining scene and the significant weight the region also carries at the European level,\u201d<\/em> as the second-largest primary producer of copper. He emphasized the \u201cstrong support provided by the Government of Andalusia to mining activity as a key foundation for the region\u2019s industrial and energy development,\u201d<\/em> with the main lines of action set out in the Strategy for Sustainable Mining in Andalusia 2030<\/strong>, approved in July 2023.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Looking ahead, he identified the main challenge as \u201cthe need to strengthen the regional mining ecosystem in order to significantly increase the capacity to process and transform minerals within the territory, thereby extending the value chain,\u201d<\/em> in line with European Union guidelines.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For his part, El\u00edas Atienza<\/strong>, CEO of CTA<\/strong>, underscored that \u201cthere is a significant opportunity around critical raw materials driven by the global transition toward decarbonization and digitalization,\u201d<\/em> and noted that \u201cthis situation opens up opportunities for regions with geological potential and industrial capacity such as Andalusia.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Atienza also emphasized that \u201cterritories capable of supplying critical raw materials while meeting high environmental and social standards can position themselves strategically in this new economy based on clean technologies and more secure value chains\u201d<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Event speakers<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n

From a business perspective, Diego Davoise Poto<\/strong>, a member of the Steering Committee of the Center of Excellence and Innovation in Sustainable Mining (CEIMS)<\/strong> and a member of AMINER\u2019s Innovation Committee<\/strong>, reviewed AMINER\u2019s trajectory over the past decade and highlighted the strong momentum Andalusia has given to sustainable metal mining, consolidating its position as a national benchmark in innovation applied to the sector.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The session, focused on Andalusia\u2019s European positioning, brought together expert voices from EU-funded strategic projects. Diana Fern\u00e1ndez<\/strong> (EIT RawMaterials Southern Spain Innovation Hub), Antonio Parra Lobato<\/strong> (Project Director of CirCular<\/strong> at Atlantic Copper), and Joaqu\u00edn Gotor Mart\u00ednez<\/strong> (Director of Technology, Innovation and Environment at CLC<\/strong>) presented key initiatives aimed at advancing more resilient, circular supply chains aligned with Europe\u2019s strategic autonomy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In this context, with a particular focus on strengthening European mining and battery value chains, the session also featured contributions from Manuel V\u00e1zquez Mora<\/strong>, Technical Advisor at the Directorate General for Mines, who presented the S3P Mining Platform<\/strong>; Marta Mac\u00edas<\/strong>, Project Manager at CTA<\/strong>, who introduced the European BATMASS<\/strong> project, related to circular processes for battery materials within the framework of the S3P Advanced Materials for Batteries Platform<\/strong>; and Nieves Valenzuela<\/strong>, Director General for the Promotion of Innovation, who outlined the main pillars of the Andalusia S4 Strategy<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Additionally, the international dimension of the event was strengthened by the participation of Ioannis Retsoulis<\/strong>, Project & Scientific Officer at the Joint Research Centre (JRC)<\/strong>, who presented the INCITE<\/strong> innovation center and its role as a driver of industrial transformation in Europe.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Regarding the opportunities and support mechanisms offered by the European Commission, the event included a session dedicated to I3<\/strong> and its interregional funding for strategic critical raw materials value chains, led by Susana Elena-P\u00e9rez<\/strong>, Coordinator of the Policy Lab \u2013 I3 Support Facility<\/strong> at the EFIS Centre<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Finally, the conference highlighted the importance of interregional cooperation through the contribution of Clara Balb\u00edn<\/strong>, Project Manager at ISMC<\/strong>, who presented collaboration between Andalusia and Castile and Le\u00f3n in the field of critical raw materials as a pathway to strengthening national positioning and increasing the influence of both regions in European initiatives.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Her participation, within the framework of the IRMHUB<\/strong> consortium, also underscored the value of collaboration between partner organizations such as CTA<\/strong> and ISMC<\/strong> in jointly advancing projects that contribute to strengthening strategic value chains in Europe.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The event was organized with the support of the IRMHUB<\/strong> project, an initiative funded with nearly \u20ac2 million<\/strong> through the European Union\u2019s Interregional Innovation Investments (I3)<\/strong> programme. IRMHUB aims to establish the first European meta-hub focused on promoting circularity and strengthening the investment capacity of less developed regions in sustainable supply chains linked to three strategic areas: wind energy and electric mobility<\/strong>, components for battery manufacturing<\/strong>, and essential metals for microchip production<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
