The latter was often missing before the Industrial Revolution, which made it difficult to build upon new discoveries and inventions. Mokyr also emphasized the importance of societies being open to new ideas and allowing change.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Philippe Aghion <\/strong>and <strong>Peter Howitt<\/strong>, in a 1992 paper, developed a mathematical model for what is known as <em>creative destruction<\/em>: when a new and better product enters the market, firms selling older products lose competitiveness. Innovation thus represents something new, and therefore creative, but it is also destructive, since companies whose technologies become obsolete are overtaken by competitors.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"442\" src=\"https:\/\/www.corporaciontecnologica.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/Captura-de-pantalla-2025-10-14-141927-1024x442.png\" alt=\"los motivos.\" class=\"wp-image-66493\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.corporaciontecnologica.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/Captura-de-pantalla-2025-10-14-141927-1024x442.png 1024w, https:\/\/www.corporaciontecnologica.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/Captura-de-pantalla-2025-10-14-141927-300x130.png 300w, https:\/\/www.corporaciontecnologica.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/Captura-de-pantalla-2025-10-14-141927-768x332.png 768w, https:\/\/www.corporaciontecnologica.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/Captura-de-pantalla-2025-10-14-141927.png 1098w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-some-key-messages-highlighted-by-the-royal-swedish-academy-of-sciences\">Some key messages highlighted by the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences<\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p>Some of the messages highlighted in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nobelprize.org\/prizes\/economic-sciences\/2025\/popular-information\/\">the outreach information provided by the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences<\/a> about the laureates\u2019 theories are:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>I<strong>mpact of AI (Artificial Intelligence):<\/strong> Mokyr\u2019s work shows that artificial intelligence (AI) could strengthen the feedback loop between propositional knowledge (how things are) and prescriptive knowledge (how to do things), and increase the speed at which useful knowledge accumulates \u2014 in other words, boosting innovation capacity.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Sustained growth cannot be taken for granted.<\/strong> Stagnation has been the norm for most of human history. According to the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences, the laureates\u2019 work shows \u201cthat we must be alert and counter threats to continuous growth: a few firms dominating the market, restrictions on academic freedom, the spread of knowledge regionally rather than globally, or blockages imposed by potentially disadvantaged groups. If we do not respond to these threats, the engine that has provided sustained growth \u2014 creative destruction \u2014 could stop working, and we would return to a state of stagnation.\u201d<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Sustained growth is not the same as sustainable growth<\/strong> (it does not automatically translate into improvements in human well-being). Innovations can have significant negative side effects. Mokyr argues that these negative effects sometimes trigger processes that allow solutions to emerge, making technological development a self-correcting process. However, the Royal Swedish Academy notes that \u201cit is clear that this often requires well-designed policies, particularly in areas such as climate change, pollution, antibiotic resistance, rising inequality, and unsustainable use of natural resources.\u201d<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Innovation creates winners and losers.<\/strong> This applies not only to companies but also to their employees. High growth requires a lot of creative destruction, meaning more jobs disappear and there is potential for high unemployment. Therefore, it is important to support affected individuals while helping them move to more productive jobs. Protecting workers \u2014 but not jobs \u2014 for example through a system sometimes called <em>flexicurity<\/em>, may be the appropriate solution, according to the Royal Swedish Academy.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The laureates also demonstrate the importance of society creating<strong> favorable conditions for skilled innovators <\/strong>and entrepreneurs. <strong>Social mobility<\/strong>, where a person\u2019s occupation is not determined by their parents\u2019 identity, is therefore important for growth.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Turning new ideas into reality<\/strong> requires practical, technical, and, no less importantly, <strong>commercial knowledge<\/strong>. Otherwise, even the brightest ideas remain on paper, like Leonardo da Vinci\u2019s helicopter designs. The Royal Swedish Academy explains that Mokyr emphasized that sustained growth first occurred in Britain because there was a large number of skilled artisans and engineers who could understand designs and transform ideas into commercial products.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-what-does-the-apd-cta-observatory-objective-innovation-contribute\">What does the APD-CTA Observatory \u201cObjective Innovation\u201d contribute?<\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Europe <\/strong>faces a significant problem of <strong>losing competitiveness<\/strong> compared to other emerging economies, and <strong>innovation <\/strong>(the focus of the studies awarded the 2025 Nobel Prize in Economics) could be the key to revitalizing it.
