BIOSCALES (Optimising Bioeconomy Innovation Ecosystems for Substitution, Circularity, and Longevity to Decouple Sustainability Trade-offs) is a Horizon Europe-funded project that will develop tools and methodologies to advance more sustainable bioeconomy innovation ecosystems across Europe. The initiative aims to support public authorities, businesses and other key stakeholders in making decisions that balance the environmental, economic and social benefits associated with biomass use.
Coordinated by the University of Graz (Austria), BIOSCALES will analyse five regional case studies in Romania, the Netherlands, Spain, Austria and Sweden to design and validate sustainability scenarios tailored to different European bioeconomy ecosystems. Through a participatory, multi-actor approach, the project will promote solutions based on three key principles: substitution, circularity and longevity.
The main expected outcomes of the project include:
- Sustainability-Optimal Target States (SOTS) for regional bioeconomy ecosystems.
- Self-assessment tools to support decision-making in other European regions.
- Online learning modules and training resources to facilitate the adoption of best practices.
- Recommendations for public authorities, businesses and policymakers.
- Resources to support the replication and exploitation of project results beyond the case studies.
The project brings together 17 organisations from seven European countries and is funded by the European Union under the Horizon Europe programme.
