The European project BIOSCALES has officially started with the celebration of its Kick-Off Meeting on 1 September. Funded by the Horizon Europe programme and coordinated by the University of Graz (Austria), the initiative will bring together research, innovation and public administration organisations from across Europe over the next four years to advance more sustainable biomass production and utilisation models.

BIOSCALES will analyse five regional case studies in Romania, the Netherlands, Spain, Austria and Sweden, providing a basis for investigating different biomass systems and assessing the challenges, opportunities and trade-offs associated with their sustainability. The results will help identify new pathways to optimise the use of biological resources and support decision-making processes for public authorities, businesses and other relevant stakeholders.

In Spain, the project involves the participation of the Andalusian Regional Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries, Water and Rural Development and Corporación Tecnológica de Andalucía (CTA). Both organisations attended the Kick-Off Meeting online and will contribute to the development of the Spanish case study. They will also take part in knowledge exchange activities and in the engagement of key regional stakeholders linked to the bioeconomy sector.

One of the distinctive features of BIOSCALES is its participatory approach, which will involve public authorities, research organisations, companies, associations and other relevant stakeholders in identifying innovative solutions that combine environmental sustainability, economic viability and social benefits. This collaborative framework will support the development of strategies tailored to the specific characteristics and needs of each territory.

About BIOSCALES

BIOSCALES is a Horizon Europe project coordinated by the University of Graz (Austria). The initiative brings together 17 organisations from seven European countries to develop innovative approaches for advancing more sustainable bioeconomy innovation ecosystems. Through regional case studies and the active involvement of multiple stakeholder groups, the project will identify solutions that optimise biomass use and support an effective transition towards a circular and resilient bioeconomy.
