CTA explains the technologies for Bioeconomy and agricultural use in Costa Rica

The CTA Business Development Manager, David Páez, and the Agrifood Technical Officer, Nathalie Chavrier, have given a workshop on “technologies for the Bioeconomy and its possibilities for family farming in Latin America and the Caribbean”. The workshop took place on 5-6th November at the headquarters of the Inter-American Institute for Cooperation on Agriculture (IICA), in San José (Costa Rica).

About 15 professionals from IICA and the Regional Fund for Agricultural Technology (FONTAGRO) have attended. The participants came from Panama, Argentina, Nicaragua, Spain, Costa Rica, Honduras, Chile and Paraguay.

IICA and FONTAGRO see the Bioeconomy as an approach to the development of family farming in Latin America. In this sense, IICA has commissioned CTA to prepare a study on the opportunities for the recovery of waste from the agricultural sector, through innovative technologies and processes based on Bioeconomy, which may lead to new business models.

The workshop has had several group dynamics with the aim of validating and comparing the results of the analysis prepared by CTA.

The objective of the Bioeconomy is to contribute to the decarbonisation of the economy, reducing the use of fossil fuels while making agribusiness chains profitable. Latin America and the Caribbean are in a privileged position to take advantage of their abundance in natural resources through the application of Bioeconomy strategies.
